Quaderns 232:New York Notebook
This is a collection of notes about an un-journey to New York: an asystematic itinerary around its countergeography, seen as the physical, formidably concrete other side of the dense urban territory which makes up the most globalised of cities. In a place where your gaze is conditioned to remember the city before you've even been there, and where everything seems to have been photographed in advance, where you can join one photographic frame with the next to form a continuous envelope which covers reality, in a city like this it is vital to form a strategy in order to break down the space you walk through, and to make an effort to un-journey through the territory, trying to thwart the pleasing ambushes the city sets for you and escape from the labyrinth of mirrors which endlessly throw back identical images. We have therefore taken as the basis for our work an indirect approach through a space where there was, apparently, no room for anything else, creating an alternative route which transfers to this notebook the gaps, the break-downs in continuity, the losses of focus and the leaps in scale discovered in the course of an imprecise itinerary
