Casas Internacional 95: Carilo
Fortunately, mankind does not always ravage nature, and in one section of the seashore, with great effort, a woods was created within an urban development project. Many years have been invested and the result has been very good: they have succeeded in making the architects involved in different projects respect guidelines regarding preservation of the environment, they have helped zoning –commercial area, hotel area, residential area– avoiding the invasion between different functions which would be conflictive. Within this space, midway between urban and natural, the architects are conditioned by the character of the place, with exuberant forests, with a great variety of species that create a play of light and shadow. In various homes we observe the installation of a wooden deck seeking the best orientation, to take best advantage of those rays of sun people seek so keenly. We find homes set as unobtrusively as possible, responding to changes in land levels which generate movement and interest, either by building on the upper level to take advantage of the views or by becoming a shelter from the wind, to the proximity of the sea and sandy terrain, the weather conditions through the different seasons, the strong sea winds which influence the orientations and place our attention on the enclosures. The houses are not isolated elements and have been integrated into the landscape; it is a fusion of architecture and nature.
We discover the manner in which natural light and the views through large glazed panes generate a special atmosphere that we find throughout Cariló; it is not exclusive of one area, it is a common feature of an exquisite place.
The materials used, intrinsically noble –machine or hand made bricks, timber which links us even more to nature, stone generally used as a cladding– are in general materials of easy maintenance, a fundamental premise for a holiday seaside architecture
