Feature: Small
The springboard (1931) designed by Gianni Mantero that juts out over Lake Como is known as an early reinforced concrete work of architecture; although it blends into the grand landscape, the thin slab is individualistic and beautiful. The Retti Candle Shop (1965) designed by Hans Hollein is quite conspicuous in the otherwise quiet atmosphere of Vienna's stucco-finished buildings. We decided to feature small works of architecture because we felt that these masterpieces suggest most clearly two seemingly opposite qualities or conditions exhibited, often simultaneously, by architecture: harmony and individuality. Architecture is always full of contradictions. Architecture, which is determined by factors such as the history of the land, consideration of the environment, building functions and client demands that interlock in complex fashion, can be said to be a microcosm of society. A small work of architecture is that microcosm succinctly expressed; it may reveal the relationship of architecture to society and nature.
